About the Item

Theodore Deck (1823 - 1891) An Iznik Style Enameled Faïence Rectangular Jardiniere Hand-painted with foliages, stylised leaves and flowers in turquoise, cobalt-blue and red outlined in black against an alternating turquoise and cobalt-blue fish-scale ground. Signed under the base TH.DECK Circa 1870 Théodore Deck (1823-1891) is one of the most famous French ceramist, known for his innovative creations and his influence on the art of ceramics in the 19th century. His works, very varied, inspired by the Moorish Style, archaic Chinese, Japonisme, Iznik or even Neo Re-naissance ranging from enameled earthenware to flamed sandstone, are today highly sought after by collectors and art lovers. Born in 1823 in Guebwiller, Alsace, Théodore Deck showed an early interest in ceramics. He began his apprenticeship in Paris in 1841 and then worked in several French factories. In 1856, he founded his own factory in Paris, where he experimented with new techniques and developed his unique style. Throughout his career, Deck collaborated with renowned artists such as Félix Bracquemond and Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse. He participates in many international exhibitions, win-ning medals and gaining notoriety. In 1887, he was appointed director of the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, a position he held until his death in 1891.
