About the Item
Vintage set of 4 flat cups with saucers and teapot is decorated with hand painted bands of flowers and stripes in brown palette. The Rosmarin series was created by Ulla Procopé in 1962; it was in production until mid 1970s. The designs are hand painted on the same “S” model forms as was Ruska, Anemone, and Kosmos lines. "S" model stoneware is tough, durable, and ovenproof, keeping with "oven to table" trend of the time; hand-painted pieces offer variations in intensity of color, with wide range of dark and light hues. Each hand painted item differs a bit from one to the other, creating a spontaneous, organic tablescape in organic brown and white palette.
The pieces are hand signed and marked with the initials of the designer (UP = Ulla Procopé) and the person who decorated the dishware. The teapot stands 4.5" tall; the cups measure 2.25" high. It is uncommon to locate a full service, making the set rather rare; we are offering a coffee service set for 6 with the coffee pot and a set of serving bowl and platter in separate listings.
Ulla (Ulrika) Procopé (1921-1968) worked in Arabia Finland art department at the same time as Kaj Franc, Kaarine Aho, and Goran Back. She trained with Olga Osol in the hand painting department at Arabia after graduating as a ceramicist from the Central School of Arts
Crafts in Helsinki. Ulla worked for the Arabia factory for 20 years, from 1948 to 1967; she was a skilled wheel thrower and a talented designer of well known classic Scandinavian design tableware series, such as Ruska, Anemone, Tutti Frutti, and Valencia. Ulla's works are represented at the numerous museums in the Nordic countries.
Sculptural, classic Scandinavian Modern set with elegant form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence will make a perfect display accent or enhance tablescapes, blending seamlessly with wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Modernist, Transitional, Organic Modern, Scandinavian Modern, Organic Modern, Japandi, Collected, or Contemporary.

Roman Erlikh
Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
