About the Item

Extra large West German ceramic water jug demonstrates the Fat Lava movement's emphasis on dramatic glaze experimentation. Bulbous form features textured brown base glaze overlaid with dark charcoal band at midsection, creating distinctive wavy drip pattern where reactive glazes meet. Loop handle includes decorative knot detail typical of period craftsmanship. West German potteries during the 1960s and 1970s developed sophisticated reactive glaze techniques, layering multiple glaze formulations that would interact during high-temperature firing. The resulting volcanic surface effects gave rise to the Fat Lava designation. Numbered marking system (490-42) indicates specific production series tracking within studio output. Piece shows wear consistent with age and use. Retains original numbered marking on base.
