About the Item

This most impressive and beautiful claret jug is most likely Bohemian in its manufacture. It is made from clear glass and has large overlaid green glass panels around its centre. The quality of the wheel engraved decoration is super fine. The front main panel shows a naked archer with a bow and arrows raising a goblet to make a toast with a bird perched behind him. The rest of the panels and the jug are decorated with foliate scrolls, floral sprays, fruit, leaves, and individual flowers. All are hand cut with beautiful craftsmanship and skill. The claret jug is gilt brass mounted forming a collar with a shaped spout, hinged lid, and an elegant handle which is comfortable to hold The glass is in excellent condition with no damage. The gilt handle shows very slight age related wear. Bohemian, circa 1890
