About the Item

For sale is a stunning set of five Mid-Century Modernist hand-blown Crystal wine glasses/goblets, the design of which is attributed to Sergio Asti, produced by V.I.T.A.C. (Vetreria Industria Toscana Articoli Cristallo) in Colle di Val d’Elsa, Tuscany, and dating from circa the 1970s. This gorgeous, perfectly weighted, handmade collection, featuring the distinctive “goccia” (drop) in the base, is in superb condition, with no chips or damage. Produced by Vetreria Industria Toscana Articoli Cristallo, which is one of the companies that emerged in Colle di Val d’Elsa, a town in Tuscany known as “The City of Crystal”, in the 1960s. V.I.T.A.C. was part of a wave of mid-20th-century firms, amongst them Arnolfo di Cambio, that kept alive the craftsmanship and industry of crystal in Tuscany. Collaborations with designers such as Joe Colombo, Marco Zanuso and Sergio Asti resulted in the town's foundries producing not only fine glass and crystal but innovative and modern designs that have stood the test of time. Sergio Asti (1926–2021) was a leading figure of Italian design in the postwar era, known for his refined balance of modernist clarity and expressive form. Trained as an architect at the Politecnico di Milano, he established his studio in 1956 and quickly gained recognition through the Compasso d’Oro award and international exhibitions. Asti collaborated with prominent Italian manufacturers such as Arnolfo di Cambio, Fontana Arte, and Artemide, producing glass, furniture, and lighting that combined industrial precision with sculptural elegance. His works are held in major design collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
