A water glass made by hand Glass designed by Martino Gamper for J. HILL’s Standard as part of our 'CUTTINGS' collection. The collection: Cuttings Cuttings is a contemporary, award-winning collection of handmade crystal glasses in six different cuts. This series features strong, intuitive marks confidently hewn out of the surface of lead crystal. The process of making cuts in this instance is less about applied decoration and closer to sculpture. The tactile crystal forms feel rugged and primitive in the hand; fingers naturally seek out the smooth hollows and crisp ridges. The series includes a whiskey glass, champagne flute, wine, beer and shot glasses plus a carafe that also functions as a vase. The Designer: Martino Gamper Italian designer Martino Gamper is a natural interventionist — cutting to create shape and interest is characteristic of his work. For J. HILL’s Standard, Gamper worked directly with the crystal, removing the material in a manner that felt instinctive, free and pleasing. The result is a series of three distinctive cuts that appear across a family of functional tableware. The Cuttings series of glassware is easy to live with; each piece being flexible in purpose and designed for frequent, everyday use. A craft-based knowledge and innate skill for making (especially in carpentry) an interest in the decorative arts and Arts and Crafts and an artist’s sensibility and individualism are all characteristic of how Gamper works today. Gamper says: ‘My approach to the technique for this collection is about revealing the potential of the cutting process. The glasses feature deep and expressive cuts far beyond the usual superficial and decorative surface’. J. Hill’s Standard J. Hill’s Standard is a maker of contemporary cut crystal, crafted by hand using knowledge and skill passed down through generations of craftsmen. We take our name from John Hill, an 18th century glass alchemist and innovator. Hill was credited with revolutionising the production of cut crystal in Ireland and with setting a new Standard of quality and material perfection. Hand-cut crystal is a craft synonymous with Ireland and, in particular, the area of Waterford. J. Hill’s Standard is building on the extraordinary hand-making skills remaining in this region.
