About the Item

A wonderfully elegant Mid-Century Claus Josef Riedel ice-glass Crystal Fruit or Salad Bowl, produced by the famous Riedel family glassworks in Austria, and dating from the late 1970s, early 1980s. This large, weighty, sculptural ice-glass, crystal piece has all the hallmarks of fine Austrian glassmaking of that era. This shell-shaped bowl is textured on the outside, smooth on the inside, and stands on three protruding feet. In fabulous, undamaged vintage condition, the bowl still retains its original "RIEDEL, WELTERFOLGE IN GLAS (World Success in Glass), Over 24% P.B.O." label. Riedel is a legendary Austrian glassmaking family whose history stretches back to 1756, renowned worldwide for its mastery of crystal and its pioneering approach to functional glass design. Over generations, the Riedel name has become synonymous with precision craftsmanship, elegant forms, and an exceptional understanding of how shape enhances the experience of wine and spirits. The company’s creations are celebrated for their refined aesthetics, meticulous handwork, and timeless quality—traits that have made Riedel a favorite among collectors, sommeliers, and design enthusiasts. Whether stemware or decorative crystal, each Riedel piece reflects a heritage of innovation and artistry. Claus Josef Riedel (1925–2004) was the visionary who transformed Riedel from a traditional glassworks into the leader of modern functional glass design. Often called the “father of the modern wine glass,” he introduced the groundbreaking idea that a glass’s shape should enhance the character of the beverage inside. His clean, minimalist designs set new standards for both aesthetics and performance, earning international acclaim and reshaping the way the world experiences fine wine and crystal. His influence continues to guide the company’s design philosophy to this day.
