About the Item

17th Century Dutch Delft Baluster Vase with Chinoiserie Decor of Figures in a Landscape Place: Delft Workshop: De Drie Vergulde Astonne By: Gerrit Kam Date: 1700 - 1716 A Dutch Delft so-called knobbelvaas, knob vase, with a Chinoiserie decoration that was inspired by Chinese porcelain vases from the Transitional period. We can see several people recreating and dancing in a landscape with flowers, plants, and rocks. Marked GK for Gerrit Kam. Gerrit Kam came from a Delftware family that owned multiple factories of many generations in the city of Delft. The monograms GK and PK on objects dating from this period are associated with the ''De Drie Vergulde Astonne'' workshop. The Kam family developed a style of their own during this period. Much of their work is completely covered with Chinese-style landscapes with people or painted sprays of flowers and birds in all sorts of attitudes. As a rule, the effect of the decoration is more satisfactory on a large surface, as in this case on this vase, than on a smaller object. This style of painting was used in Delft for many years. Executed by master painters in a blue on a tin-glazed white ground. Many of these vases would have been made, but needless to say, very few of these pieces have survived the ages. The vase is in excellent condition with only two small chips from the top rim. Further with the normal fritting and wear as can be expected for its age.
