About the Item
"A Question of Taste": Rare London Delftware Blue
White Sweetmeat or Oyster Dish,
Attributed to William Griffith,
Circa 1750-60
A rare and distinctively modeled English Delftware (tin-glazed earthenware) dish, produced in London circa 1750–1760. This piece is attributed to the William Griffith Pottery on Lambeth High Street.
The dish takes a quatrefoil form, divided into four distinct, heart-shaped wells centered around a floral rosette. The decoration is executed in a rich underglaze blue, featuring two alternating botanical patterns of stylized flowers and leaves. A striking feature of this example is the decoration on the dividers and rim: a solid blue ground reserved with a repeating pattern of white stylized leaves and flower heads. The vessel is raised on four small bun feet, giving it a slight elevation from the table.
Measurements:
Diameter: 8 3/16 inches (20.8 cm)
Height: 3/4 inches (1.9 cm)
Historical Context:
While traditionally cataloged by collectors as a "sweetmeat" or "spice" dish—intended for serving candied fruits, nuts, or pickles at the end of a meal—recent scholarship suggests a more specific culinary use. Robert Aronson (of the renowned Dutch Delft dynasty), citing research by Martijn Wijn, has proposed that these segmented vessels were actually designed as oyster dishes, with the compartments perfectly suited for holding shelled oysters in their liquor or sauce.
