About the Item

An 18th century Dutch Delft blue and white five finger tulip vase made by De Metalen Pot, circa 1750. The vessel is painted with birds among peonies and rockwork. The five openings at the top are decorated with leaves and scrolling vines. The handles are in the form of panthers climbing up each side of the vase. The description does not do justice to this beautiful Delft vase. It must be seen with tulips (see figure # 2). Dimensions: 7.5" across x 8.25" height x 3" deep Condition: Small edge chips invisibly restored Price: $6,800 Background of Delft : By the middle of the 15th century, potters from southern Europe migrated through France to the Netherlands, and the earthenware industry became well established in Antwerp. In the second half of the 16th century, under religious pressure, many of these protestant artisans were forced to leave Antwerp. Most moved to the northern Netherlands. The rise of the potting industry in the northern Netherlands coincided with the decline of the beer brewing industry in the town of Delft. As the brewers in Delft ceased production, their large abandoned buildings on the canals were quickly occupied by pottery makers. In the middle of the 17th century, a war in China interrupted the production of Chinese blue and white porcelain to Europe. The potters in Delft were able to fill the void in the market, and they began producing earthenware in the style of Chinese porcelain, which they successfully marketed as “porcelain.” Within the next century and a half, the delft pottery-makers became increasingly successful, and their range of styles broadened to include European subjects and other original styles. At the height of production, the city of Delft counted almost 40 factories. So successful were the Delft factories that many factories across Europe and especially in England across the channel began to produce delftware.

This blue and white English Delft jug, made circa 1750-1760, has a tall, narrow neck with a slightly flared rim on a distinctive globular body. The decoration is the word "BOY" framed by blue dashes. It is hand-painted in blue, done in a freehand, fluid style that includes typical irregularities in the paint. Historically, 18th-century English Delftware is known for its freehand, fluid decoration, characterized by minor irregularities that evoke an authentic folk art quality. The rustic and uneven glaze is also characteristic of this pottery. The jug has a utilitarian feel, featuring four protruding lugs on the sides. Its modest yet charming form, rounded shape, and understated ornamentation reflect the everyday aesthetic of mid-18th-century Delftware production. Delftware jugs were often created for public houses, and "Boy" might reference part of a pub name, a local drinking song, or a common toast. Just as likely, given England's strong maritime traditions, this could refer to a sailor's drinking vessel. In naval and military slang, "Boy" was often used to refer to young sailors or recruits.
