About the Item

Bring color, narrative charm, and authentic Breton artistry to a wall or tabletop with this antique French faience dish from the renowned Porquier-Beau workshop in Quimper, Brittany. Hand-painted circa 1880–1890, the square dish with gently undulating edges depicts a touching scene titled Pèlerins de Hanvec, a group of Breton villagers gathered in prayer before a roadside cross, rendered with expressive detail and traditional regional costumes. The rim is framed with scrolling green foliate borders, while the underside features the classic Quimper speckled blue glaze associated with late-19th-century production. Signed Pelerins de Hanvec PB on the back, the dish reflects the celebrated collaboration between painter Alfred Beau and the Porquier family, whose partnership (1875–1904) produced some of the most artistically refined and collectible Quimper wares ever made. Pieces from this period are prized for their painterly quality, folkloric storytelling, and richly saturated glazes, hallmarks that distinguish Porquier-Beau from later, more commercial Quimper output. This sculptural, hand-formed dish is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with expected glaze irregularities and minor wear typical of antique faience.
