About the Item
A set of six Creil et Montereau Canary Yellow faïence, transfer printed plates, circa 1830.
Dating to the French Restoration period, the transfer-printed plates are glazed in the distinctive brilliant canary yellow for which the Creil and Monterau potteries were known.
Printed in the neoclassic style, the images show domestic scenes set in a romantic landscape, bordered in a wide, stylized running floral.
The set consists of two plates of each scene:
Two plates show two women and a young girl sitting together in front of a manor house.
Two plates show two women and a young girl walking together in front of a house with a thatched roof.
Two plates show a man and woman walking in front of a house. The man holds a long pole and smokes a pipe, the woman holds a pitcher and a bowl.
Creil et Montereau Faïenceries operated in the French communes of Creil, Oise, and Montereau, from 1797 until 1876 under Lebeuf Milliet
Cie.
By employing English potters, they introduced the technique of transfer printing on a creamware type pottery, in 19th Century France.
Impressed CREIL and showing the pattern numbers, along with a printed floral mark.
