About the Item

This set comprises four mid-18th-century Delft plates, each with a scalloped rim and decoration in cobalt blue. The central field shows a single tree rising from stylised rockwork, framed by a narrow foliate border. The motif is commonly referred to as the Tea Tree pattern but is also identified as Tree of Life or Orange Tree, representing a Dutch adaptation of a Chinese garden composition derived from Kangxi famille-bleue prototypes. Variants of this design appear across multiple Delft workshops between circa 1730 and 1780, differing in tree structure, foliage density, and border treatment. These plates bear the Van Duijn mark, indicating production at De Porceleyne Schotel, a Delft faience manufactory active from the late 16th century until 1791. The mark “IVDuijn” was registered in 1764 under Johannes van Duijn and continued under his widow after 1772.
