About the Item

18th-century Delftware plate with scalloped rim, made of tin-glazed earthenware from Delft, Netherlands. The plate has a scalloped edge and is decorated in cobalt blue on a white tin-glazed ground, following design conventions influenced by Chinese blue-and-white porcelain of the Kangxi period, widely imported and imitated in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. The central medallion features a stylized floral composition. Surrounding it is a wide border divided into alternating panels: fan-shaped reserves containing floral sprays and circular cartouches with smaller botanical elements. These are set against a densely painted crosshatched background, a common decorative device in 18th-century Delft ceramics. The plate's circular form, shallow well, and broad rim suggest it may have functioned as the underdish for a tureen, although it now survives as an independent object. condition: Minor rim fritting and glaze wear consistent with age
