About the Item

A polychrome Dutch Delft earthenware dish, traditionally called a “bliksem” (lightning) dish, painted in vibrant colors with a shaped central cartouche reserved with waterflowers, surrounded by characteristic zigzag motifs and monograms. The design is inspired by Chinese porcelain, copied by Delft potters in the early 18th century. Despite the name, the “lightning” patterns are not lightning—they represent wooden pathways crossing a pond, deliberately angled to ward off evil spirits. A fine example of early 18th-century Delft craftsmanship, combining decorative charm with symbolic meaning. 23m diameter Reglued chip to the rim (see pictures). otherwise in fine condition.
