About the Item

Pair of early 19th-century Dutch polychrome plates, tin-glazed earthenware with polychrome hand-painted decoration. The central motif shows a stylized floral spray with symmetrical leaves and blossoms, surrounded by scrolling foliate elements and simple border ornament. The balanced, orderly design reflects the influence of Neoclassical taste in the early 1800s, translated into the vernacular Delftware tradition. These plates belong to the category of Boerendelft (“Farmers’ Delft”), a popular form of Delft faience made in the 18th and 19th centuries for rural households. Unlike the refined and often factory-marked wares produced for the elite or export markets, Boerendelft was typically unmarked, more rustic, and decorated in bright polychrome palettes of green, yellow, blue, and manganese. These plates were functional as well as decorative, often hung on farmhouse walls or used for special occasions. Unmarked, as is typical for Boerendelft. Diameter approx. 23 cm (9 in). Condition: Good antique condition, with expected rim fritting and glaze wear consistent with age and use. No cracks or restorations.
