About the Item
Mid-18th Century Dutch Blooms: A Pair of Polychrome Delft Floral Masterpieces
The pair of Dutch Delft Polychrome Botanical Plaques date to the Mid-18th Century and feature a vibrant floral design.
Key Features and Description
The plaques are shaped and each depicts an exuberant display of flowers set in an oval-handled jardiniere at the center.
• Coloring: The design is polychrome, featuring multiple colors. The central floral arrangement includes shades of blue, orange/red, yellow, and brown.
•
• Rim and Border: The molded, raised rim is bordered with a red band containing a continuous yellow floral vine.
•
• Shell Motifs: Molded shells embellish the plaque: a large shell is at the top, and three smaller shells are placed at the bottom, left, and right sides. All shells are colored in red and yellow.
•
• Dimensions: Each plaque measures 9 inches high x 9 3/4 inches wide x 1 inch deep (22.86cm x 24.77cm)
•
• Mark: One plaque has a large scratched "H" on its reverse side.

Context and Historical Significance
These plaques are examples of Delftware, which were referred to as "porcelain paintings" in household inventories, suggesting they were intended to be displayed and admired much like paintings on panel, canvas, or copper.
• Imagery Source: The still-life depictions of flowers and fruits found on Delftware, including these plaques, borrowed imagery from the popular seventeenth-century Dutch floral still-life paintings of the Golden Age. * Artistic Influence: Delftware painters were often influenced by prints (woodcuts, etchings, or engravings) rather than having direct access to the original oil paintings. These prints served as the primary source of imagery, whether available in the pottery's collection or supplied for a special commission. The compositions were closely based on these print sources, though the painters had some artistic license.
• Comparison: A similar plaque, dated 1763, is part of the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum collection (accession # 3071-1853).
