About the Item
Dress a console or vanity with this charming antique French faience box shaped as a fleur-de-lys. Crafted in France in the early 20th century circa 1920 and attributed to Alcide Chaumeil, the lidded vessel is hand-painted in deep cobalt blue with a romantic castle scene framed by leafy trees and expressive landscape details. Executed in the manner of Delft, the decoration features crisp outlines, soft washes, and the classic blue-and-white palette. The sides are further embellished with scrolling vine motifs, and the underside bears the characteristic “CA” mark and production number 444.
Alcide Chaumeil was part of a respected Parisian faience family known for refined hand painting and for blending Delft and Rouen influences into sculptural French forms. His workshop earned recognition for its balanced compositions, delicate brushwork, and excellent firing techniques that lend each piece a luminous finish.
This sculptural box is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and would bring an elegant French accent to a desk, dresser, or display shelf.
