About the Item
Decorate a shelf, console, or kitchen display with this charming sculptural faience house, crafted in Brittany by the Henriot Quimper atelier and signed by the noted Breton artist J.E. Sevellec. Made circa 1920, the hollow ceramic structure is modeled as a traditional stone cottage with two tall chimneys, green-paned windows, and an arched open doorway. The pitched roof is painted in deep slate blue with touches of yellow lichen, echoing the weathered rooftops typical of coastal Finistère architecture.
The hand-applied surface textures and lively color palette reflect the expressive Quimper style of the early 20th century, a period during which Henriot collaborated with regional artists to produce sculptural works inspired by Breton life and folklore. The interior bears the inscription “Henriot Quimper – J.E. Sevellec” on the back wall, confirming its artistic origin.
Jean-Émile Sevellec (1897–1971) was a Breton painter, illustrator, and sculptor associated with the Ecole de Quimper. Known for his depictions of Breton villages, maritime scenes, and rural traditions, Sevellec collaborated with both Henriot and HB Quimper, creating ceramic figures, architectural models, and decorative pieces. His works are appreciated for their storytelling quality, regional accuracy, and expressive modeling. Sevellec’s contributions helped define the artistic revival of Quimper faience in the early 20th century.
This decorative antique house sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining strong color and charming folk-art character.
