White Rococo: The London Delftware Sauce Boat,
Chinoiserie Chic: English Delftware, Circa 1790
This elegant English delftware sauce boat is a fine example of late 18th-century ceramic production, precisely dating to around 1790 and likely produced in London. Its form mimics contemporary silver design, featuring a graceful, long curved spout and a highly textured "crabstock" handle that resembles natural branches, a popular Rococo detail.
The body of the boat is adorned with a delicate blue and white Chinoiserie design, featuring fanciful pagodas, serene landscapes, and stylized buildings, reflecting the enduring European fascination with Asian aesthetics. The Rococo shape is further emphasized by the scalloped rim and a charming shell-edge interior border. A single, neatly painted flower sprig decorates the interior base.
Historical Context and Attribution
The rarity and attribution of this piece are supported by scholarly reference. The shape of the sauce boat is known to come in two sizes, and while this large example is painted with a Chinoiserie design, it is recognized as a counterpart to the European landscape designs typically seen on the larger size. Its particular color of blue and painting style suggest an origin in a London workshop, a detail reinforced by similar examples illustrated in London Delftware by Frank Britton.
The piece carries distinguished provenance, having once been part of a notable Philadelphia Collection and passing through the hands of renowned dealer Jonathan Horne Antiques in London in 1982. The fact that the sauce boat exhibits typical characteristics of delftware—such as chips to the rim and crazing lines on the tin-glazed earthenware—simply attests to its age and authenticity.
