Tile panel with the decoration of a Dutch Warship Made in the city of Harlingen, The Netherlands. Circa 1810. This rare and fine painted Dutch Delftware tile panel, mural, or in this case more a tile painting is of large size of 20 tiles. Tile panels with paintings of ships, of this size, are very rare and hard to find. Most of them are in museums and private collections. The painting is very fine and contains many wonderful details, for example, the prow with the figurehead. Special about this one is that the image is a warship instead of the more common yachts and merchant ships. On the back of the down-right tile, there is also an inscription that says: oorlogsschip (warship). This is quite unusual. The painting and execution of the tiles are of exceptional quality. This tile panel has been made by one of the leading Frisian Dutch ateliers in the city of Harlingen. The Northern cities were famous for their exceptionally high-quality tile production and delivered their tiles widely to rich homes and government buildings. This piece should not be considered a tile panel but as a maritime painting. This tile panel is unique and one of a kind. One other is known, the mirror image of this one. The mirror image is Published in the book series of Fries Aardewerk VI: Harlingen, producten 1720-1933. The current location of this tile panel is unknown. The tiles are mounted on a lightweight aluminum panel in a modern frame. Before, the tiles were mounted on a wooden framework. Because of the tension and the movement of the wood, four tiles were broken. Those tiles are now professionally restored. The last four pictures give an idea of displaying an eye-catching piece like this. Also with adding a frame, it gets a totally different look.
