About the Item

Rare Japonism "Folded" Fruit Bowl from service "Bracquemond-Rousseau" of Faience Manufacture Creil et Montereau. This French earthenware Faience piece is part of the world-renowned service (pieces of which are in public collections of Victoria Albert Museum, Musée d'Orsay, Petit Palais Museum, Metropolitan NY Museum, and Occidental art Tokyo Museum). Its decoration of animals are after etchings ordered by merchant-publisher François-Eugène Rousseau to artist Félix Bracquemond -inspired by Japanese artist Hokusaï -. Printing of the drawings in black was placed randomly on French Creil Montereau faience pieces, and its coloring was hand-done freely by the workers. Such process , totally new in its time , made each piece unique and of infinite variety. This particular fruit bowl is decorated with a pheasant, butterflies, birds, and various flowers. The service was presented at the World's Fair of 1867 and was met with immediate commercial success , and is considered an iconic example of Japonism vogue from the 2nd half of the 19th century. Note : marks on base "Creil / LM&Cie / Montereau / Modèle Rousseau à Paris". condition : very good / minor shade of use inside bottom Reference : similar folded fruit bowl at the French Musée d'Orsay ( OAO-1093).
