About the Item

This pair of large blue and white chargers was hand painted at De Porcelene Bijl* "The Axe" circa 1770. The mark on the reverse is that of Hugo Brouwer, who ran the factory and was a prominent figure in the Dutch Delftware industry. He registered his "HB" mark in 1764. The center of each charger is filled with lovely flowering peonies. We see the flowers in full bloom, intertwined with buds and leaves, displaying nature's cycle of life and renewal. The borders have ten shaped panels, each enclosing a single flower, a bud, and leaves. The pattern includes several shades of blue, giving it depth and visual interest. The white edge of each charger is cut in a lovely lobed and barbed pattern that complements the painted decoration. A thin blue line accentuates this white edge. The design is dynamic and beautiful! Marks: "HB" for Hugo Brouwer at "The Axe" Dimensions: 13.5" diameter x 2" height Condition: Excellent with small edge chips invisibly restored Price: $2,400 * Background of De Porcelene Bijl "The Axe": Founded in Delft in 1657, the factory produced Delft pottery until 1803 De Porceleyne Bijl was known for its high-quality tin-glazed earthenware. Background of Dutch Delft: The technique of making Delft was first described in writing by Gerrit Paape in "The Delft Pottery Maker," written in 1794 and dedicated to Lambertus Sanderus, the owner of De Porceleyne Claeuw (The Porcelain Claw). Delft faience began in the 17th century. Much of the most beautiful Delft was produced in the Dutch city of Delft. The Delft potters began to coat their pots thoroughly in a white tin glaze. They then covered the white tin glaze with a clear glaze, giving depth to the fired surface and smoothness to cobalt blues. Over time, they created a good resemblance to porcelain. By circa 1650, the technical skills of the potters and painters were much improved, and Delft began its golden age.
