About the Item

This striking pair of faïence vases was crafted in France circa 1880 in the Delft style and features hand-painted blue and white decoration on a finely reticulated ground. Each baluster-form vessel is pierced with a lattice motif, framed by scrolling cartouches enclosing pastoral and romantic scenes on both front and back, ranging from figures in 18th-century attire to serene landscapes with boats and ruins. The vases are surmounted by matching domed lids, each adorned with pierced decoration and topped with a pinecone-style finial. The cobalt palette and figural work are typical of 19th-century French interpretations of Dutch Delft pottery, while the intricate openwork gives the pair a highly decorative and sculptural presence. Marked on the underside with a hand-painted blue monogram resembling an intertwined “R,” the pair likely originates from one of the faïenceries in Desvres, a northern French town renowned for its Delft-style ceramics. This style and marking are consistent with smaller Desvres ateliers active during the late 19th century, known for their high-quality tin-glazed earthenware and painted latticework forms. Each vase measures approximately 16 inches high by 8.5 inches in diameter. Both are in excellent condition commensurate with age. A rare and elegant pair, ideal for display on a mantel, console, or in a glazed cabinet.
