About the Item

Title Spanish Talavera de la Reina Tin-Glazed Earthenware Charger with Renaissance-Style Female Portrait ⸻ Description Hand-painted tin-glazed earthenware charger produced in the Talavera de la Reina tradition of Spain, a historic center of ceramic production renowned for its maiolica-style wares. The plate is decorated with a Renaissance-inspired female portrait, shown in bust form with elaborate coiffure, ruffled collar, and patterned costume, framed by scrolling foliate ornamentation. The palette of cobalt blue, ochre yellow, and warm ivory ground is characteristic of Talavera de la Reina ceramics, reflecting Iberian interpretations of Italian Renaissance models. The painterly execution shows confident line work and subtle tonal variation, with minor asymmetry consistent with hand-painted production. The glazed surface exhibits light crazing and small firing variations appropriate to age and traditional tin-glaze techniques. The reverse features a shallow foot ring and pierced holes, allowing the plate to be displayed as wall decoration, as intended for decorative chargers of this type. ⸻ Details • Origin: Talavera de la Reina, Spain • Date: 20th Century • Material: Tin-glazed earthenware • Technique: Hand-painted • Condition: Good vintage condition; light glaze crazing and minor firing irregularities consistent with age and handmade production
