About the Item

Théodore Deck (1823–1891) Faience Bowl / Jardinière with Celadon Glaze Paris, France, circa 1875 Fine faience with a monochrome celadon glaze, softly nuanced and satin-like in finish. The elongated form features undulating contours, with scrolled volutes at each end and a subtle central raised motif, giving the piece a refined sculptural presence. The pale celadon green glaze, with delicate tonal variations and depth, is characteristic of Théodore Deck’s celebrated technical innovations. Deck is renowned for reviving and perfecting glazes inspired by Chinese celadons, Islamic ceramics, and the Italian Renaissance, achieving exceptional chromatic harmony and luminosity. The piece is incised under the base with the mark “TH. DECK”, confirming its production in the Parisian workshop of Théodore Deck. A highly representative example of Deck’s decorative vocabulary, this work combines elegant modeling, chromatic restraint, and outstanding glaze quality—qualities that established Deck’s international reputation and secured his place in major museum collections. Impressed Uppercase Mark “TH. DECK” under the base and A Under the signature TH. DECK, the presence of an A is known and documented in the workshop production. The A corresponds to an internal letter of classification for the workshop, used by Théodore Deck for: identify a series of models or molds, sometimes indicate a variant of shape or decoration, and more broadly serve for production monitoring (shapes, sizes, models).
