About the Item

This set of 12 hand painted plates are unusual in that they depict scenes of freshwater related locations in America. Most scenic plates focus on European subjects and locales whereas the named places on this set are iconic. Each plate is named on the reverse and include sites such as "Eau Gallee", "Indian River, Florida", "City of Cincinnati", "The Passaic, Below Little Falls", "Natural Bridge, Virginia", "Providence", "The City of St. Louis", "Delaware Water Gap, From the South", "West Point, From the Highlands”, all relating to the limnology, the fascinating study of bodies of fresh water. Signed by F. Micklewright, the painting is detailed and the colors are naturalistic. Each plate is framed by an unusual shaped rim, trimmed in gold and is a true work of art. These would make a compelling display and great conversation starter. All in excellent condition, retailed by Plummer Ltd, NY.
