12 Italian Porcelain Dishes circa 1790 in Collection Metropolitan Museum

About the Item

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has in their collection a pair of Doccia Ginori wine coolers in this same pattern* (see details below). This is a rare set of a dozen beautiful 18th century Italian Ginori Doccia porcelain dishes. The dishes are true hard paste porcelain, decorated with the colorful porcellana antica modello Tulipano pattern (the Tulip pattern). The pattern shows tulips along with other flowers painted in green, blue, yellow, iron red, and purple (see images). The gently lobed border is painted with lovely flower sprigs. The pattern was among the most popular in 18th century Italy. Setting a table with these dishes will make a beautiful statement of Italian elegance and tradition. Dimensions: 9.25 inches diameter Condition: Good: The defects are original from when the dishes were made in the kiln. On one dish the paint ran when the plate was originally fired. Several dishes have very slight rubbing to the glaze on the white ground. (this is hard to see). Two dishes have slight burn along the edge from when they were made in the kiln Price: $2100 In this pattern we also have an outstanding charger, 13 inches diameter, condition excellent, price: $1,100 (see image #8), and a shell shaped serving dish, 7" x 7.75", price: $500 (see image #6). Background of Ginori Doccia: The Ginori Porcelain manufactory, at Doccia, near Florence, was founded in 1735 by Marchese Carlo Ginori. In 1896 the name of the business was changed to Richard-Ginori. Today the company is still known as Richard-Ginori. In the 18th century the factory used tin glaze to create a milk white surface which served as an effective background for a palette of strong painted colors (see images).
