About the Item

A rare and finely decorated dinner service by William Northwood, Burslem, England, dating to the late 19th century. The “Maine” pattern features a richly detailed floral motif in multicolour tones of pink, blue, yellow, and green, accented by intricate scrolling cartouches and a textured border. This vibrant palette, combined with Northwood’s distinctive transfer technique, gives the pieces an exceptional decorative presence. Maker: William Northwood (Reliable, Burslem, England) Pattern: “Maine” Type: Semi-porcelain plate Period: Late 19th century (c. 1880–1890) Origin: Staffordshire, England Mark: Printed backstamp with kiln motif reading William Northwood Reliable Burslem England Semi-Porcelain Maine Condition: Good antique condition; light age-related wear, glaze speckling, and minor surface marks consistent with age. 2 plates have chips (photographed) No cracks or repairs. Northwood’s works are highly sought after by collectors of Staffordshire pottery for their quality, historical importance, and artistry. The “Maine” pattern is a particularly desirable design due to its use of multiple colors in transfer printing, a technique that was both labor-intensive and innovative for its time. Plates of this form and pattern remain scarce, making this example a significant addition for serious collectors of Victorian ceramics.
