About the Item

This is a stunning part dessert service from circa 1860 made by Brown Westhead Moore. The service consists of a high footed tazza, two medium tazzas, two low tazzas and eight plates. Brown-Westhead Moore was a continuation of the famous Ridgway pottery, one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Minton, Coalport and others. They were located at the Cauldon Pottery, and later in the 20th Century the pottery was renamed Cauldon for a period of time. Ridgway had a tradition of a very wide-ranging offer of china products, anything from the most sublime dinnerware to humble toilet pots. It is notoriously difficult to identify their wares and this is one reason their beautiful tea wares are often underestimated. Brown-Westhead Moore unfortunately shares this habit and this set, like others, is not marked as Brown-Westhead Moore. However we can deduct from the style and pattern number that the set was made around 1860. Brown-Westhead Moore continued Ridgway's tradition of a wide range of offers, and this dessert service belongs to some of the very sophisticated products they made. It is potted in very white, smooth porcelain with a beautiful shaped rim with six acanthus leaf arrangements that are pierced. The rim of each item is coloured in hot pink, a very popular colour among Victorians. At the time, pink was not seen as a feminine colour; it was equally suitable for men and stood for courtesy, erudition and civility; all qualities of the well-adjusted Victorian middle class who would have dined off this beautiful set. Each item has a beautifully painted botanical study; all flowers are common English flowers as you can find them in any cottage garden, realistically painted with great precision and skill. The high footed tazza is stood on a beautifully but modestly shaped foot. The service is unmarked but all items have the pattern number 52, which points to roughly the year 1860. Condition report The service is in beautiful condition that is good for use; however there are a few issues to note. The high tazza is discoloured on the face due to crazing (see last picture). One low and both medium tazzas have a professional and hardly visible repair and should therefore not be exposed to liquid (they are fine to use for dry foods and be wiped with a damp cloth afterwards). One of the low tazzas has an old staple repair that is visible but doesn't distract too much, and it does not affect its usability. Of the plates, three are crazed but this is not obvious as there is no discolouration. Of all these shortcomings, only the staple repair and the discolouration of the high tazza are obvious to the eye. All decorations as well as the pink rim are bright and looking like new, including the repaired items which have been re-fired. If you would like to see more detailed pictures of the various issues please ask! Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
