About the Item
Exquisite Bloom: Chinese Export Famille Rose Dinner Service
This magnificent eighteen-piece Chinese Export Porcelain Dinner Service, dating from Circa 1730–1735, is a superb example of the early use of the Famille Rose palette, a color scheme developed in the early 18th century specifically for the Western market. Its intricate design and high quality reflect the luxury goods demanded by aristocratic and wealthy European families.
Design and Palette: The Famille Rose Revolution
The service is characterized by a central design framed by a distinctive palm leaf reserve, which is elegantly outlined in a brilliant over-glaze turquoise enamel. Within this reserve, a large and beautifully rendered floral sprig dominates, featuring vibrant rose-pink peonies and other assorted blossoms.
The border is equally rich, painted with delicate branches and blossoms of white prunus and brown bamboo, set against a swirling, fine sepia ground. This color scheme, known as Famille Rose (or Yingcai), was revolutionary because of its use of opaque white enamel:
Historical Context: China to Order
Porcelain services of this quality were commissioned by wealthy patrons, often bearing custom arms or monograms (though this service does not), and were shipped to Europe on East India Company voyages. The sheer size and uniformity of this set (eighteen pieces of varying sizes) speak to the significant investment and prestige associated with owning a complete Chinese Export dinner service in the 18th century.
The highly detailed, floral aesthetic reflects the rococo taste of the time, adapting traditional Chinese motifs, such as bamboo and prunus, for the European drawing-room.
