About the Item

This is a beautiful part dessert service made by Davenport in 1869. It consists of an oval comport and six plates and is decorated with beautiful hand painted fruits. Davenport was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Ridgway, Minton, Coalport and others and they created very high quality tea and dinnerware. This beautiful service consists of an oval comport and six plates. Originally it would have had a few more serving dishes and probably up to 12 plates. However, given that our modern dinners tend to be simpler than those in the Victorian days, this is a good number of dishes for a small dinner or tea party. The service is potted in very white and smooth bone china with elegant shapes and the comport has beautifully moulded handles. The flowing surface of each item is picked out in gilt. Each item has a beautiful arrangement of hand painted fruits: melons, apples, pears, berries, and many other fruits. In the 19th Century desserts tended to consist of fruit (with cream, sauce or in the form of trifles). Each item is marked with a blue printed diamond mark for the year 1869 and DAVENPORT underneath it; the pattern number is 1158C. Condition report The service is in perfect condition and seems to have never been used. There is one tiny firing fault in the rim of the comport, which is not really visible from the face. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Dimensions comport 30 X 21cm (11.75" X 8.25") and 7.5cm (3") high; plates 23.5cm (9.25") diameter.
