About the Item

Golden Harvest: Botanical Naturalism in Derby Porcelain This exquisite set of six plates is a superb example of the Derby Porcelain Factory at its late 18th-century peak, capturing the refined taste for botanical naturalism that defined the Georgian era. Derby Porcelain Factory, Pattern 126, Circa 1790 Derby, England Produced during the prosperous "Duesbury II" era, these plates showcase the superb craftsmanship for which Derby, a holder of the Royal Warrant, was celebrated. Each plate features a meticulous, hand-painted central arrangement of autumnal fruit—including luscious grapes, plums, and apples—set within an elegant, heart-shaped gilt border. The rich, high-fire yellow rim is a luxurious frame, further enhanced by a continuous polychrome leafy band and copious gold highlighting. This lavish combination of rich color and gilt decoration was the height of dining fashion, intended for the most exclusive dessert services. A Direct Link to the Artist: The plates bear the factory’s puce crossed batons and "D" mark, along with the pattern number "126." This number is a direct reference to the renowned factory painter William Longden, who was known for his fine, naturalistic brushwork. As a tangible link to a specific 18th-century artisan, this set not only represents the high-water mark of English porcelain artistry but also the individual contributions of its craftsmen (Gilhespy, 1965). Materials: Soft-Paste Porcelain, Polychrome Enamels, Gold Gilding Dimensions: Diameter: 8.5 inches (22 cm) Condition Provenance Condition: Some typical minor gilt rubbing is present, consistent with age and use. Provenance: The plates are marked with the definitive puce crossed batons, "D" mark, and pattern number "126." References Gilhespy, F. Brayshaw. (1965). Derby Porcelain (page 52). Spring Books, London. (Reference for pattern number 126 and painter William Longden). (Ref: ny5431-lr)
