About the Item

Regency Splendor: Important Set of 12 Flight, Barr Barr "Claret Ground" Armorial Plates, Circa 1820–1825 An exceptional set of twelve porcelain dessert plates produced by the renowned Flight, Barr Barr (Worcester) manufactory during the late Regency period (Circa 1820–1825). These plates are a tour-de-force of the factory's "best" ware, featuring the highly desirable and expensive claret (rich burgundy) ground. Each plate features a gracefully scalloped rim edged in gold. The luxurious claret border is shaped by elaborate, scrolling cartouches defined by raised, meticulously tooled gilt beading—a technique that required immense skill and multiple firings. The Heraldry: The central reserve is finely painted with an armorial crest depicting a striking red wolf (or fox) head erased, with a blue tongue and white teeth. The crest is surmounted by a pink ribbon bearing the motto "BOULOGNE ET CADIX". Historical Note: This motto is historically associated with the House of Châtillon, a prominent French noble family, and commemorates significant military campaigns at Boulogne and Cadiz during the late 17th and 18th centuries. The commissioning of such a service from a premier English manufactory highlights the cross-channel connections of the aristocracy during the post-Napoleonic era. Markings: Impressed Mark: Each plate bears the impressed crowned monogram "FBB" (for Flight, Barr Barr). Printed Mark: One plate retains the circular printed factory mark on the base. Condition: Excellent antique condition. The claret ground is even and rich (often prone to wear, but well-preserved here). The raised gilding remains crisp and bright. No chips or cracks. Measurements: Diameter: 8 1/2 inches (21.6 cm) Height: 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) Literature Reference: Henry Sandon, Flight Barr Worcester Porcelain, 1783-1840: See Plate 187 (p. 196) for an armorial plate with this identical rim treatment. See Plate 152 (p. 158) for a service featuring a similar claret ground with shaped raised gilt cartouches. (Ref: NY10865-clm)
