About the Item

Four Gaudy Dutch 'Urn' Pattern 10' Plates This is a beautiful and rare set of Gaudy Dutch porcelain, specifically in the 'Urn' pattern. These plates were produced in England for the American market and are known for their vibrant colors and distinctive folk art style. The bright cobalt blue, iron red, and green enamels are characteristic of this pattern, along with the urn motif and floral decorations. Gaudy Dutch ceramics were popular in the United States during the early to mid-19th century, and their whimsical designs made them favorites among collectors. The soft paste porcelain used in these pieces gives them a delicate feel, while the hand-painted patterns show the artistry of the period. Gaudy Dutch porcelain was produced primarily between 1810 and 1850. These plates were made in England, especially in Staffordshire, for export to the American market. The term "Gaudy Dutch" is believed to be a corruption of "Gaudy Deutsch", referencing the Pennsylvania Dutch (German immigrants in the U.S.), who favored these brightly colored wares. The bold patterns and vibrant colors were inspired by Imari porcelain from Japan. The urn, often accompanied by floral decorations, symbolizes abundance and classical elegance, Typical colors include cobalt blue, iron red, green, and sometimes yellow, all hand-painted over a white or cream ground, Made from soft paste porcelain, these pieces are slightly more delicate and porous than hard paste porcelain, with a characteristic soft glaze. These plates became popular in the United States due to their affordability and aesthetic appeal. They were often part of everyday tableware but have now become prized collectibles due to their age and historical context.
