About the Item

Indigo Botanicals: Set of 12 Sculptural French Faience "Leaf" Plates, Circa 1840 An exquisite set of twelve French faience fine (pearlware) dessert plates, produced by the celebrated manufactory Creil et Montereau circa 1840. These plates are a triumph of the "botanical" style that swept 19th-century Europe. Each piece is treated as a sculptural object, with the entire surface molded in low relief to mimic the texture of a single, large serrated leaf. The veins and ribs are delicately outlined in a deep, lustrous indigo blue against the creamy white body, while the rim is finished with a matching blue stippled or "shagreen" ground. This striking "bleu et blanc" aesthetic transforms a simple dining plate into a work of graphic art. Markings: Printed Mark: The reverse bears the oval black transfer stamp: CREIL ET MONTEREAU / MÉDAILLES D'OR / LM CIE / PORCEL. OPAQUE. The "LM Cie" refers to Lebeuf, Milliet Co., the company formed by the pivotal merger of the Creil and Montereau factories in 1840. Condition: Good antique condition. 10 Plates: Excellent condition with no significant chips or cracks. One plate: Has an old, professional invisible repair to a break and one plate has a short hairline visible only on the reverse (does not affect display or structural integrity). Glazes remain glossy and the blue enamel is vivid. Measurements: Diameter: 8 1/2 inches (21.6 cm) Historical Context: The year 1840 was a watershed moment for French ceramics. The factories of Creil (Oise) and Montereau (Seine-et-Marne) merged to form a powerhouse of production under Lebeuf and Milliet. They specialized in porcelaine opaque (a high-quality semi-vitreous earthenware) that rivaled English Wedgwood. This specific "Leaf" pattern was a bestseller, reflecting the Romantic era's obsession with nature and the desire to "bring the garden to the table." (Ref: NY9965-nnmi)
