About the Item

Improbable Palate: Fornasetti's Surreal Snake Recipe for Fleming Joffe Artist: Piero Fornasetti (Italian, 1913-1988) Design Period: 1960s-1974 Commissioned By: Fleming Joffe Ltd. (New York City) Take a good look at this plate. It's not just a dinner dish—it's a mischievous piece of mid-century design, a very exclusive corporate gift, and a tiny piece of art history all wrapped up in one. This is a rare Piero Fornasetti "Cook" plate, specifically featuring the recipe for "Snake a la Cleopatra." Designed between the 1960s and 1974, this is one of just fourteen designs Fornasetti created for a small, high-end New York leather goods company called Fleming Joffe. An Exclusive Corporate Gift Imagine being one of Fleming Joffe’s best clients. For seven years, your New Year's present wasn't a bottle of wine or a fruitcake, but one of these delightfully strange plates! They were originally presented in a square box made to look like it was covered in hide—a nod to the leather company. The insert promised, "Each year you will receive more until the end of the series." Fornasetti, the master of graphic wit and repetition, created this series of plates, each featuring a "decidedly improbable recipe"—like this one that suggests you "Remove the hide (saving it for shoes) and the bones," and then use the head to serve your exotic creation on hot rice. The recipe itself is, of course, a complete joke, reflecting Fornasetti's playful surrealism. The Company They Kept Fleming Joffe clearly had a taste for cutting-edge art. This small company didn't just commission Fornasetti; they also hired a young Andy Warhol to create their ads, design their showroom, and even pair his drawings with the bouncy text of poet Ogden Nash! To have both Fornasetti and Warhol working for you shows that Fleming Joffe was an incredibly stylish and forward-thinking company. This 10 1/4-inch plate is a perfect example of Fornasetti’s signature style: classical illustration, graphic precision, and a heavy dose of visual humor. It’s an exclusive collectible, a conversation starter, and a true oddity in the world of fine porcelain. Reference: Fornasetti: The Complete Universe, edited by Barnaba Fornasetti, page 614, #163. The book notes that while earlier references suggested twelve designs, there were actually fourteen distinct designs created over seven years. (Ref: NY9101E-arx)
