About the Item

Recipe and Rarity: Fornasetti's Fleming Joffe Cook Plates (c. 1960s–Early 1970s) This is an exceptionally rare find: a pair of Piero Fornasetti porcelain "Cook Plates" from the series created for the New York hide company Fleming Joffe Ltd. dating from the 1960s to the early 1970s. The set, featuring the "Calcutta Minestrone" and "Corfam à la Du Pont" designs, is presented in its original faux hide box, complete with the paper separator and the original "Thank you" New Year's card. The series is a fascinating example of corporate commissioning that crosses high art, graphic design, and advertising. Fornasetti, known for his surreal and witty illustrations, was tasked with creating a collectible series of fourteen plates, issued to Fleming Joffe's clients in pairs each New Year. The Designs Each plate features a humorous and elaborate "recipe" or narrative, blending culinary instructions with surreal imagery: "Calcutta Minestrone": This plate features a detailed, lizard-like creature and various root vegetables, with the recipe text humorously blending the exotic with the mundane. "Corfam à la Du Pont": This plate is a surreal advertisement for DuPont’s Corfam synthetic leather (a competitor to natural hides), depicting a fantastical, bird-like creature and the product's narrative, likely a wry commentary on the leather industry. The designs are executed in silkscreen and transfer print, showcasing Fornasetti's signature graphic precision and playful juxtaposition of image and text. Specifications and Marks Designs: Calcutta Minestrone and Corfam à la Du Pont Date: 1960s–Early 1970s Dimensions: 10 1/4 inches diameter x 1 inch high Medium: Silkscreen and transfer-printed porcelain Provenance: Made exclusively for Fleming Joffe Ltd., New York. Accessories: Includes original faux hide box, paper separator, and New Year’s greeting card. Historical Context: Art and Corporate Advertising This collaboration places Fornasetti within a distinct American post-war tradition where major companies commissioned avant-garde artists. Fleming Joffe, despite being a small leather goods company, was known for its daring use of major artists, including Andy Warhol, who also created ads, copy, and showroom designs for the firm. Fornasetti’s involvement here underscores the international reach of his appeal and his ability to infuse commercial assignments with his unique, witty, and collectible artistic sensibility. The plates served as highly sophisticated and memorable corporate gifts, ensuring high retention and rarity today. Reference Fornasetti, Barnaba (ed.). Fornasetti: The Complete Universe, Page 614, #162. (Illustrates a selection of the fourteen plates from this series, noting they were issued in pairs to clients). (Ref: NY10056-iiu)
