About the Item
S. Kirk
Son set of 18 sterling silver plates, hand-decorated in exquisite repousse pattern, beautifully adorned with floral motifs along the rim, from the early 20th century, consisting of:
12 dinner plates or chargers, measuring 11'' in diameter by 1/2'' in height
6 soup plates, measuring 11'' in diameter by 1 1/3'' in height
Total weight is an impressive 404.6 troy ounces. Hallmarks are shown.
Baltimore’s prominent silver manufacturing company, Samuel Kirk
Son, dates its beginning to 1815. Just 5 years later, Maria Hester Monroe, daughter of President James Monroe, was married in the White House. She chose Kirk Mayflower as her silverware pattern. During this early period Kirk introduced to America the repousse treatment for silverware. Their works are present in the permanent collections of prestigious museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Cooper Hewitt, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
