About the Item
A French faïence hand painted asparagus plate in the Strasbourg pattern from Sarreguemines, circa 1890-1900.
Showing charming naive floral décor, multiple plates are available, each varying slightly in their decoration. The pink asparagus border also varies in intensity from plate to plate.
Bouquet sprays dot the creamy white plates, which are outlined in a bright pink running border of asparagus spears and acanthus leaves. There is a deep oval sauce well for a dipping sauce. The mold work shows a raised shell like design that borders the rim of the sauce holder, as well as the inner and outer rims of the plate. The painted floral sprays are colored in yellow, pink, and blue with green leaves.
Book Reference: ‘Artichauts et Asperge in Barbotine’ by Maryse Bottero, page 42.
