About the Item

Greek Grandeur: Extensive Set of 33 Spode "Zeus in His Chariot" Dinner Plates (c. 1806–1820) An impressive and extensive set of 33 early 19th-century blue and white transfer-printed pottery dinner plates by Spode, featuring the celebrated "Greek" pattern. This series, introduced around 1806, was Spode's response to the intense "Greek Revival" fashion sweeping the British Regency period. Each plate features the central scene known as "Zeus in His Chariot." The King of the Gods is depicted driving a quadriga (four-horse chariot), holding a thunderbolt. The elaborate border is equally significant, featuring four distinct Etruscan/Greek urns interspersed with shaped reserves containing Neoclassical figures. The design source is historically documented: the images were adapted from "Outlines from the Figures and Compositions upon the Greek, Roman and Etruscan Vases of the late Sir William Hamilton," engraved by Mr. Kirk. This pattern is notable in Spode's history as likely the first "multi-scene" pattern, where different serving pieces featured different central subjects, though these dinner plates are uniform. Condition: Good antique condition overall. One plate features a variation with a brown rim (likely a rare color trial or later replacement included in the set). Markings: • Impressed: Various impressed potter's marks and numbers, including "2". • (Note: Early examples of this pattern often lack the printed Spode mark, relying on the distinct quality of the transfer and clay body for attribution). Measurements: • Diameter: 24.77 cm (9 3/4 inches) • Height: 2.54 cm (1 inch) Literature Reference: • Drakard Holdway, Spode Transfer Printed Ware 1784-1833: Pages 248–250, Pattern Number P906-1. • Spode Museum Trust: The pattern captures the early 19th-century fascination with antiquity, fueled by the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii and the collections of Sir William Hamilton.
