About the Item

Two highly desirable, rare and hard-to-find Art Deco Mandarin Ware flamingo plates – one soup bowl, one dinner plate – made by Royal Doulton in England in the 1920s. This Hollywood Regency artistically significant design is by Robert Allen, who headed the decorating department at Royal Doulton in the early 20th century. The hand painted enamelled porcelain has bright, lush colouring of the flamingos and flowers, surrounded by a black enamel border. Note how they look to each other across the two plates. Works by Robert Allen are highly collectible thanks to their distinctive aesthetic and their technical complexity, commanding higher prices than standard Doulton ware as a result. This particular pattern was greatly admired and exhibited internationally when first released. They are fully stamped and numbered on the reverse. There is some light rubbing to small sections of the enamelling but overall they are in bright and beautiful condition. This design is very sought after. The flamingo is the quintessential Florida icon and so these plates are iconic Palm Beach Modern style. Sizes: Soup bowl: 24cm / 9.6” diameter x 5cm / 2” deep Plate: 26.5cm / 10.4” diameter x 1.5cm / 0.6” deep
