17th Century Dutch "Roemer" with Vine Branches Engraved on the Bowl

About the Item

Dutch "Roemer" drinking glass for wine made of clear green tinted glass with some bubbles, inclusions and very thin spilled glass threads. Globular cuppa underlined with an engrailed band. Cylindrical lower section with four applied raspberry prunts. Foot of horizontal woven glass threads. Excellent condition. No chips or cracks. “Roemen” old Dutch for "celebrate" or "toast". The foot made by trailing a thread of molten glass around a conical core. Unlike later examples ribbed on both external and internal surfaces. You may find comparable shaped glasses in many still life paintings by Dutch masters of the 17th century. The prunts were applied to facilitate a better grip for greasy fingers.
