Heading : Baluster stem wine glass Period : 1730 - 1777 Origin : England or possibly Norway Colour : Clear with pronounced dark grey hue Bowl : Bell with thickened base containing air tear Stem : Inverted baluster - air tear which swells in both the kop and the thickened seciotn of the bowl Foot : Conical Pontil : Snapped Glass Type : Lead Size : 15.5cm height, 6.5cm diameter bowl, 7.8cm diameter foot Condition : Excellent, no chips or cracks Restoration : None Weight: 212 grams Additional Information : Possibly Norwegian in origin, it is a dark grey and weighs a hefty 2102grams for a glass of this size.The Kongelig Allernaadigst Octrojerede Nordske Compagnie sent one Morten Waern, known as Martin Warren when in England, on an act of industrial espionage to determine the secrets of the English glass industry. Having tried to recruit glassblowers in Liverpool he was sent to Newgate prison London to reflect upon his sins. He was released on bail and in 1755 and fled the country. Several English glass workers arrived in Norway together with many more from Germany where the "company" had sent other agents. The names of the English glassworkers who migrated togehter with their families to the Hurdal and Nostetangen factories are documented. The factory existed from 1741-1777 Deception and skulduggery in the antique glass industry is sadly still prevalent, espionage is however slightly more glamorous than fraud theft and deception.
