About the Item

This is an English rare hand-blown, Jacobite, mid-Georgian, engraved lead glass Drinking Tankard with a loop handle, dating to the mid 18th century, circa 1745. Jacobite glasses have historical significance and are very collectable. Jacobite tankards are rare items particularly with the seven petal rose and one bud. This glass is made from English lead glass which is relatively heavy and has a soft grey color with age related wear to the foot rim as expected with over 250 years of use. The glass has the usual striations, inclusions and tiny air bubbles you would expect to see in 18th century glass which gives these glasses their unique charm. This tankard is beautifully engraved with a large seven petal rose, which is much rarer than the usual roses with six petals. It also has a single bud which are thought to be earlier than the two bud examples. The rose represents the crown of England and the single bud the Old Pretender as per the explanation below. There are also two leaves engraved by the bud and four leaves on the other side of the rose stem. The tankard has a snapped off pontil mark below the base. Overall a very beautiful and rare example of Jacobite History. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jacobite glasses These were used by secret societies who supported the claim to the throne of the descendants of the Roman Catholic Stuart King, James 11 of England, who abdicated in 1688 in favour of the Protestants, William and Mary. These glasses are engraved with a variety of Stuart mottoes and emblems with the Jacobite symbol of the White Rose of York, representing the English crown. The buds beside the rose represent the pretenders; James 11 son, James Francis Edward Stuart, known as the Old Pretender and his son, Charles Edward Stuart, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Young Pretender.

This is a very good hand-blown, English, mid-Georgian, Wine drinking glass with a round funnel (RF) engraved bowl on a solid stem, dating to the middle of the 18th century, circa 1760. These glasses are very collectable. It is made from English lead glass which is relatively heavy and has a soft grey colour. The RF (round funnel) bowl is well engraved with OXO under rim and a facet cut bowl base, sitting on a a solid stem, over a conical foot with a snapped off pontil below to the underside.
