A wonderful cut glass water or lemonade jug from the American Brilliant Period (ABP). The image displays an antique American Brilliant Period (ABP) cut crystal pitcher, a style popular from the late 19th to early 20th century. These pieces are known for their high lead content, making them heavy, thick, and exceptionally clear It is an antique piece, probably made by manufacturers such as Hawks, dating back to the American Brilliant Period (circa 1880-1920). This stunning piece of design has crystal with a high degree of clarity, indicative of a high lead content, a sign of extremely high quality and purity. It features an exclusive, clean-cut design, characteristic of the American Brilliant Period (ABP) style, with multiple motifs forming beautiful stars of various sizes that fill most of the surface. Fan-shaped elements and “daisy and button” motifs are present in the lower and central parts. The jug has a sinuous shape, narrower in the centre and wider at the base, while the handle is beautifully shaped, transparent and also features cut glass details along the outer edge. It features intricate, hand-cut glass designs typical of the ABP style, which was popular from approximately 1876 to 1917 appears heavy and well-made, a common trait of high-quality cut glass from this era. An ABP crystal refers to high-quality, hand-cut leaded glass from the American Brilliant Period (roughly 1876-1920), characterized by its exceptional clarity, weight, and dazzling sparkle from deep, intricate patterns cut by hand using grinding wheels, often featuring hobstars and fans, and containing high lead content for brilliance. He learned glass cutting from his father and worked at various glass houses in England from 1842 until 1853 when he emigrated to New York. He owned interests in several cutting firms there. In 1855 he formed the glass-cutting department of the Brooklyn Flint Glass Company and purchased their equipment. He established a cutting shop in Corning, NY, in 1868 at the request of Amory Houghton, Sr. It was housed on the second floor of the new Corning Flint Glass Works factory. Houghton agreed to sell blanks exclusively to Hoare. It is believed that the cut glass blank business was crucial to the Flint Glass Works’ success. In the 1870s and early 1880s, J. Hoare Co. was one of the largest cut glass concerns in the country. By 1873, Captain Hoare moved all of his business operations and family to Corning. They expanded with another cutting shop in Wellsboro, PA, operating from 1906-1914. John Hoare was a master cutter. He won awards at various exhibitions in Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and in 1893 won four medals at the Columbian Exposition including the gold medal. The Hoare shop furnished cut glass to the White House during President Grant’s administration in 1873, believed to be in the Lincoln pattern. Captain Hoare died in 1896 and his son James continued the business, joined by his brother John S. Hoare. The J. Hoare Co. firm closed in October 1920 with the decline of the cut glass industry.
