Large Vase, Murano, circa 1970s
A striking Murano glass vase by Alfredo Barbini, crafted circa the 1970s. Made in colorless glass partially overlaid with opaque white and ochre, the vase is decorated with applied, melted-in murrine throughout, demonstrating Barbini’s mastery of vetro sommerso and murrine incalmo techniques, hallmark methods of his mid-century production. The piece is signed on the underside “Barbini Murano.”

Alfredo Barbini (1912–2007), a glass artist born in 1912 on the islands of Murano in the lagoon of Venice, Italy, was one of Murano's leading figures of the 20th century. His parents were members of families, which had been prominent in the glassmaking industry on Murano for generations as glassblowers and beadmakers.
