About the Item

A fine antique Art Nouveau cameo glass vase, by Émile Gallé (1846-1904), circa 1900. The vase of tall tapering form, the rounded body with a yellow translucent ground and overlaid with red glass. The design is of Carnation flowers, some fully open and some yet to open, the vase is intricately carved out with a layered cameo technique, using both tools and acid etching then fire polished to give depth and contrast to the yellow translucent mat ground. The vase is in excellent condition, it is signed "Gallé" to the lower part of the tapering body, this lovely example of Emile Galle's visionary designs is ready to grace your space. Émile Gallé (1846–1904) was a pioneering French visionary artist and designer, a main proponent of in the Art Nouveau movement, renowned for his innovative, nature-inspired glass and furniture featuring botanical motifs, cameo glass, and inlaid marquetry. A botanist and chemist, he transformed glass-making using techniques like acid etching, layering colors (cased glass), and carving to create rich, painterly effects, often inspired by the forests of Lorraine. He founded the École de Nancy (Nancy School) to promote decorative arts and created "talking furniture" with inlaid literary quotes.
