Antique Quezal School Pulled Feather Art Glass Shade, 20th Century

About the Item

An antique art glass lamp shade in the manner of Quezal having bulbous form and red, white and gold pulled feather design with gold interior and flared rim, signed Zephyr Glass on collar interior as photographed, 20th century Measures: 3.75" height x 5.5" diameter Additional information: The big names in American art glass are Louis Comfort Tiffany, maker of Tiffany "Favrile" glass, and Frederick Carder, maker of Stueben "Aurene" glass. Tiffany produced glass from 1892-1928, while Carder's designs were made from 1904 up until the time of his death in 1963. Both designed and produced in characteristic Art Nouveau and Modern styles and their wares enjoy immense popularity, and prices, in the marketplace. However, some dealers and collectors consider the art glass produced by a third firm to be of comparable quality. The Quezal Art Glass and Decorating Co. of New York City had a shorter lifespan than its more famous competitors. It produced less glass and made less money, but today you will find Quezal alongside Tiffany and Stueben at the better shows and auctions. The history of Quezal is a bit obscure, and I cannot say for sure whether it went into business in 1901 or 1902, or if it closed in 1924 or 1925. The creative forces behind the firm were Martin Bach Sr. and Thomas Johnson, both of whom had worked for Tiffany. "Quezal" was trademarked in 1902, and was an alteration of the word "quetzal." The quetzal is a brightly colored Central American bird, and the male quetzal is renowned for its long flowing feathers. This was an Apt name for a firm that set out to make glass in the Art Nouveau style. As a design movement, Art Nouveau drew inspiration from complex, free-flowing forms of nature, such as twining vegetation or the plumage of birds. (Chicago Tribune).
