Exceptional 19th Century Memorial Jewelry Set with Hairwork, Garnets and Seed Pearls
An exquisite and rare 19th century memorial jewelry ensemble, consisting of a ring and a matching memorial pendant, dating to circa 1830–1870 (Biedermeier to early Victorian period).
The pendant features an oval hairwork composition. The red hair, preserved under glass, is surrounded by a refined border of natural seed pearls and deep red garnets, set in rosegold. Memorial jewelry of this type was created to honor and remember a loved one, often incorporating hair as an intimate and symbolic keepsake. The pendant was once a brooch, but it has been made into a pendant in the past.
The accompanying ring echoes the same materials and craftsmanship, with a continuous band of garnets and seed pearls set in gold, clearly conceived as a matching piece to the pendant. Together, they form a coherent and highly evocative memorial ensemble, likely made on commission.
